Choose the Right Homeowners Insurance Policy for Your Needs

Tips to Choose the Right Homeowners InsuranceFind out what you need to know about choosing the right homeowners insurance.

Your home is where you feel safest. It’s a place where you can unwind and relax without worry. However, life is unpredictable. A house fire or neighborhood burglary can put your home in danger. That’s why you need the right protection for your home. Invest in the right homeowners insurance so that you can rest easy knowing that your home is well protected. But, with so many policies out there, it can be hard to choose one for your home. Check out what you need to know about selecting a home insurance policy so that you have the coverage that you need.

Sit Down with Your Agent.

Choosing the right coverage for your home is important. Without the right coverage, your home is left vulnerable. However, sometimes you need a little assistance when it comes to deciding how much coverage is best for your home. That way you’re not under or over insured. Meet with your independent insurance agent so that they can help guide you to the right type of insurance and they can help you find ways to qualify for discounts.

Compare Policies.

Once you’ve found a policy that you like, look at a couple of comparable plans. It’s important that you compare and contrast your options so that you can choose the coverage that best fits your lifestyle. Choose at least three policies to compare so that you’re best able to make your decision.

Think About Add-Ons.

While a basic policy gives you the coverage that you need to cover the basics, sometimes you need a little additional coverage. Whether you need extra valuable item coverage or you need an earthquake supplement, talk to your agent about what sort of add-ons that you may need so that you can tailor your coverage to your needs.

How to Prepare for Submitting Proof of Loss

Filing Proof Of Loss

When filing a claim you need to submit proof of loss!

You buy insurance and hope to never to use it. However, life happens and sometimes you need to file a claim. As you file your insurance claim you may be required to submit a proof of loss. Here’s what you should do to prepare for proof of loss in the event that you need to file a claim.

Home:

In the event that something is stolen or damaged in you home, you’d need to file a claim to fix it. In order to get it fixed, you need to be able to show the insurance company that you had the item in the first place. Make sure that you take an inventory of your home and keep it safe, just in case you need to reference it later.

  • Take pictures. Whether you take stills or a video, be sure to have a visual record of all your belongings.
  • Save your receipts. If you’ve purchased a pricey item, make sure to save the receipt along with your inventory so that you can prove to the insurance company that you had the item in the first place.

Car:

In the event that you are involved in a car accident, be sure to document as much as possible to ensure that you can submit proof of loss to your insurance company. You will likely have to submit a written statement to your insurance, so make sure to record as many details as possible.

  • Make sure to record the other drivers’ information. Include their names, drivers license number, insurance information, car information, and contact information.
  • Take lots of pictures. Make sure that you have at least four clear pictures to show any damages.
  • Be prepared to write out a statement. Include the date of the accident, parties involved, details of the accident, how it happened, and any external information that may be valuable.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Home Water Damage

Reduce Risk of Home Water Damage

Prevent any unwanted water damage and conserve water!

Whilst California faces a drought, water conservation is of the upmost importance, but did you know that water conservation is helpful in preventing home water damage? Water damage is the leading claim on homeowner insurance policies. Checking for leaks can save water and prevent accidental water damage. Protect your home with these tips to make your water usage more efficient and reduce the risk of unwanted water damage!

Inspect sinks, showers, and tubs.

Check to see if your bathroom’s utilities are watertight. The seal and caulking around the sinks, showers and tubs should be in perfect condition.

Check your hoses.

Water heaters, dishwashers, or refrigerator icemakers, and washing machines all have hoses. Check to make sure they’re all in working order. If you notice any cracks or leaks replace them. A good rule of thumb is to replace your hoses every five to seven years.

Shut off the water when you’re not home.

Never leave a water-using machine running while your not home. It poses the risk of leaking and causing serious water damage.

Maintain your plumbing.

Even the best plumbing has a shelf-life and will eventually fail. ALL items will age and as they do, they will fail. Routinely check your pipes and make any necessary replacements. It’s a small investment that can save you a lot of money in the long-run.

Check your roof and downspouts.

Any missing parts or debris may pose a risk to potential water damage.

Maintain sprinkler systems.

If installed too close to your home, irrigations systems can cause water damage to your home. Maintain your pipes to prevent any pipe bursts. You may also want to consider drought-resistant landscaping. It will reduce your water usage and therefore lowers risk of water damage.

Know how and where to shut off your water.

In the event that you do have a water emergency, know how and where to turn off the water. It saves a precious resource and money.

Is Your Home Ready For The Next Earthquake?

Taking the right steps to earthquake proof your house will help to keep you safe.

There are thousands of benefits of living in California. From sunny skies almost all year round and hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline, it is no surprise why California is one of the most sought after destinations. However, living in California also comes with the threat of experiencing an earthquake. Keep these earthquake safety tips in mind to help earthquake proof your home.

  • Create an emergency kit that has enough food and water for every member of your family for at least 72 hours. A three-day supply of any medications that you take should also be in your kit.
  • Support all lights and ceiling fans with brackets that are securely screwed into a ceiling joist.
  • If you have a chimney, make sure the masonry is braced to the roof joists or reinforce your roof sheathing to help protect your house from the falling masonry.
  • Anchor all file cabinets, bookcases, and entertainment centers to wall studs with flexible fasteners to help prevent tipping.
  • Install a blocking device or lip to prevent any books or other items from falling off your shelves.
  • Use museum putty to secure all collectibles, china, trophies, or other delicate items on shelves.
  • Secure all computers, TVs, and stereos with safety straps and buckles to keep them secure while also allowing for easy relocation and removal.
  • Install latches on all cabinet doors to prevent any items from spilling out during an earthquake.
  • Strap the top and bottom of your water heater to wall studs with heavy gauge metal strapping.
  • Know where your gas shutoff valve is and ensure that you know how to safely turn off the gas supply.

Keep in mind that your homeowners insurance policy will not provide any coverage for damage that is done during an earthquake, only a specific earthquake insurance policy will. Contact Panzera Insurance Agency to ensure that you have the coverage that you deserve.
