Earthquakes and Homeowners Insurance: Automatic Coverage?

Believe it or not, when you have a homeowners insurance policy, you aren’t automatically covered against a lot of things. Not only does this include tornados, hurricanes and forest fires, but (important to note for California residents) earthquakes as well. As most people realize, many California areas are subject to earthquakes and many are strong enough to create quite a bit of damage. However, without proper earthquake insurance, you may be left with a financial disaster as well as a property disaster.

Recent earthquakes in California, such as the 4.4 magnitude quake in the Los Angeles (Westwood, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Bel Air) area on March 17th, are classic examples of how an earthquake, even a fairly mild one, can cause damage. While there may not be cataclysmic lights falling and buildings disintegrating, there could be foundation damage to homes, broken windows or even cracked walls to deal with.

If you live in California, you may want to double-check with your insurance agent to make sure you have earthquake coverage. If you’re in the Tarzana area, the Panzera Insurance Agency Inc is located right on Ventura Boulevard and completely understands the need for earthquake insurance coverage! (Yes, we felt it too!)
